The CAMec Museum (Centro d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea) is located in La Spezia, 1 Piazza Cesare Battisti.
The current collection is an exciting and enjoyable experience, featuring over 200 incredible works of art. These have been carefully selected and arranged beyond the standard museum conventions, bringing a fresh and engaging perspective to contemporary art.
Clear curatorial choices are noticeable in the organisation of the works on display. Some rooms present a series of thematically linked works, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a certain artistic movement or to follow the creative journey of specific artists. Other rooms offer instead an interesting contrast between apparently opposite styles, in a striking visual display. One such example is the juxtaposition of geometric abstraction, with its precise shapes and lines, and organic abstraction and its fluid, natural forms.
The works have been organised according to different topics, so that visitors may journey through various movements and eras of contemporary art, diving into major artistic and cultural themes.
CAMeC opens its doors on 5th October after a complete renovation, both of the building and of the museum’s cultural vision.
The curator, Gerhard Wolf, is a renowned art historian, director of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. With an extensive international academic experience, his research spans topics such as global art, ecology and image theories. He has curated major exhibitions and published numerous essays.
CAMeC is committed to being accessible and socially inclusive, and offers many educational and fun activities, guided tours, workshops and meetings with artists. The museum’s goal is to promote culture, bringing people closer to contemporary art and fuelling critical thought, uniting an aesthetic experience with an ethical approach.
CAMeC aims to guarantee an inclusive and accessible museum experience for all visitors. People with disabilities will find assistance and tools to support them during their visit.
The museum is open to working with associations and social cooperatives, to ensure that everyone is able to live the museum in its entirety, regardless of any particular condition.
The museum’s spaces have been carefully planned to be physically accessible. The CAMeC building has been designed and renovated to be completely free from any architectural barriers, allowing ease of movement throughout the exhibition area and other rooms.
