Kenneth Noland is considered one of the leading figures of Color Field Painting and Hard Edge Painting, movements in which colour becomes the primary subject, shaping and defining the artwork. His production goes through a number of cycles, each exploring variations on identical compositional processes: the Targets or Circles, the Chevrons, the Stripes, the Shaped Canvases and the Plaids, to which Spring Gauze belongs. This work is notable for its unusual format, an extremely elongated vertical rectangle that requires an unusual observation. The work consists of intersecting lines of colour running across the canvas, in a regular, vertical pattern. The chromatic fabric of the background is uneven and has different hues, producing a slight vibration, amplified by the use of the diluted acrylic paint, whose application leaves no room for reworking or corrections.
