The painting, in light grey tones, is thought to be a transcription of a passage about the Resistance; the letters on the canvas are surrounded by white brushstrokes making them difficult to read, except for the ellipsis, intentionally highlighted in red. The painting reflects a brief phase in Novelli’s artistic career. After turning away from Informal Art in 1958, he became a member of the Continuity Group from 1961 to 1962. During this period, Novelli began to explore the relationship between words and images, narrative and automatic writing, sometimes using hallucinogens to explore uncertain, white-veiled forms, as seen in this work. He also became involved in Visual Poetry, political concerns and cultural exchange with the poets of “Gruppo 63”.
