In the tempera painting, several geometric motifs can be identified with a diagonal cross standing out. The composition, rendered with long black brushstrokes and a few red marks, is connected to Lüpertz’s dithyrambic painting, which he has promoted since the 1960s. The term refers to the ecstatic cult of Dionysus, the god of the Double Door, dead and then resurrected, symbolising the death and rebirth of both art and the artist. The work belongs to a phase in which Lüpertz’s painting assumes an emblematic and abstract value. For me, motifs are only superficial stimuli. I have always considered myself an abstract artist.
