About
Photography as the undisputed protagonist. From October 19, 2025 to March 22, 2026, Fotosintesi. Fotografie dalla Collezione Carla Sozzani– curated by Maddalena Scarzella in collaboration with Fondazione Sozzani – will present at CAMeC more than one hundred works from the private photographic collection of one of the most influential figures in the visual culture of the past fifty years.
The Masters on Display
Among the selected and exhibited works are photographs by Karl Blossfeldt, David LaChapelle, Horst P. Horst, Urs Lüthi, László Moholy-Nagy, Sarah Moon, Helmut Newton, Man Ray, Paolo Roversi, Alfred Stieglitz, and many others. From the curator’s careful selection emerges a narrative of a vision of the world, femininity, and beauty that runs through modern and contemporary photography.
Carla Sozzani: A Key Figure in Contemporary Visual Culture
Carla Sozzani is one of the most influential voices in international visual culture. A journalist, publisher, and gallerist, she worked for some of the most important fashion and design magazines, helping to redefine languages and trends. In 1990, she founded the Carla Sozzani Gallery in Corso Como, Milan, which later evolved into the celebrated concept store 10 Corso Como, a global landmark for photography, contemporary art, fashion, and design. A passionate collector, over the years she has assembled a photographic heritage of extraordinary quality, reflecting her pioneering vision and her role as a trendsetter and cultural forerunner.
A collection that, like a process of photosynthesis, has nourished new visions and contributed to reshaping the visual languages of fashion, publishing, and art from the 1980s to the present.
A Dialogue with Our Collection
In Fotosintesi. Fotografie dalla Collezione Carla Sozzani, the works of great masters enter into dialogue with those of the museum’s permanent collection, which includes a significant nucleus of photographs of the highest quality: from the historical avant-gardes to the conceptual and performative practices of the 20th century.
As our director Antonio Grulli notes: “Carla Sozzani is one of the figures who most profoundly shaped visual culture in recent decades, doing so much for photography and photographers, not only by collecting but by acting directly. This exhibition puts her collection into dialogue with the CAMeC’s permanent holdings, reaffirming the museum’s vocation as a center of research and cultural innovation.
I would like to sincerely thank the Associazione Amici del CAMeC, without whose managerial and intellectual support this exhibition would not have been possible.”
“I am proud that my collection comes to life in the galleries of CAMeC in La Spezia, a museum of modern and contemporary art that preserves such an important permanent photography collection. I am deeply grateful to Director Grulli and to the entire museum for believing in this project and making it possible,” stated Carla Sozzani.”
