“In a work of art, what is visible undeniably matters. Its meanings unfold within the realm of the visible. Yet, equally significant is what the artwork conceals: the hidden dimension it shields behind its appearance.
Jacopo Benassi is one of artists who has most radically explored “the other side of the artwork,” creating a constant interplay in his pieces between the desire for the image and its concealment, between the power of the fragments of reality he captures in his photographs and paintings, and the awareness of the image’s fragility – one that, rather than weakening its meanings, amplifies them.
Benassi’s work is one of the most distinctive in contemporary art, where certain artists have long been exploring the expressive potential of erasure, censorship, and the evanescence of the artwork as ways of approaching, through a “negative path”, the deeper, hidden core of the meanings behind their craft.”
