Ritorno a casa. Pippo Oriani’s triptych joins the CAMeC collection

An outstanding expression of Second Futurism, created for the first edition of the Premio del Golfo, Magical Simultaneities of the Gulf becomes part of the city’s collections

We welcome into our permanent exhibition Simultaneità magiche del Golfo. Tellaro Lerici Muggiano / Muggiano La Spezia Cadimare / Cadimare Fezzano Portovenere, a triptych painted in 1932 by Turin-born artist Pippo Oriani for the first edition of the Premio del Golfo. Recently acquired by the Municipality of La Spezia, the work will be presented to the public on Friday 10 October at 5:30 p.m.

A significant work for the city

Identified and brought to attention by Andrea Marmori, Director of the Museo Civico Amedeo Lia, the work represents an acquisition of major importance for the city. With this triptych Oriani – a master of Aeropainting – won third prize at the Premio del Golfo, an initiative that connected twentieth-century artistic history with the territory of La Spezia.

Aerial views of the Gulf

The three canvases, conceived as a single sequence, depict aerial views of the Gulf of La Spezia: the Castle of Lerici, the islands of Palmaria and Tino, Portovenere, and the shipyards. Ships sail the waters while airplanes cross the skies, composing a suspended and dynamic vision where the aerial perspective and the freedom of composition lend the work a visionary, almost cinematic character.

Dialogue with Marinetti and Farocki

The triptych will be on view – until 22 March 2026 – alongside excerpts from Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s Aeropoema del Golfo della Spezia and the video Images of the World and the Inscription of War (1988) by German artist Harun Farocki. This juxtaposition allows Oriani’s work to be read not only as a historical and artistic testimony but also as a contemporary metaphor: the “view from above,” detached and technological, once evoked by Aeropainting, has today become the prevailing paradigm in the age of drones.
