The generation of Northern Romanticism profoundly challenged history painting; the landscape genre, until then considered inferior, was given new purposes and new possibilities. <\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Landscape painting became capable of addressing the same themes concerning human destiny, politics and morality that had previously been considered the exclusive domain of the highest genre in the academic hierarchy. The great Romantic landscape is Northern: German, with Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge; and English, with Joseph M.W.
